Thangka Paintings are popular Tibetan paintings. A ‘Thangka’ is also known as ‘Tanka’ or ‘Tangka’. In Tibetan the word ‘thang’ means flat. Thangka Paintings are painted or embroidered Buddhist banner. The thangka painting is a complicated, composite three-dimensional object.
Thangka is a beautiful wall-hanging that is further decorated with gold, silk and wood. Thangkas are visually very stimulating and perform various functions and depicts the life of the Buddha. The most common shape of a Thangka is the upright rectangular form.
The origin of the Thangka painting lay deep-rooted in the Indian religious art. These paintings heavenly draw inspiration from Nepalese, Chinese and Kashmiri styles. Thangkas can also be rolled and called a scroll-painting. A Thangka painting is an object of devotion, spiritual practice, and a bringer of blessings. Thangkas come in a variety of styles, portraying the Buddha and other Hindu deities. It is believed that the hanging painting brings blessings in the household and serves as a constant reminder of the Buddha’s teachings of compassion, kindness and wisdom.
