The metal piece on which meenakari is done is fixed on a lac stick. There are designs of flowers, birds and fish engraved on the metal which creates walls or grooves to hold colors. The color's enamel dust is poured into the grooves and then each color is fired individually. The heat from the furnace melts the color and the liquid gets spread equally into the groove. This is repeated.
When each colour is fired individually, those colors which are heat resistant are applied first and then re-fired with additional color. White is applied first and red at the end, as a rule. After the last color has been fired, the object is cooled and burnished with agate. The hollows of the grooves are filled with different colors which determine the play of light.
