Onyx is chalcedony quartz with a black color and fine texture. Onyx has derived its name from the Greek word ‘onux’, that means ‘finger nail’. According to legends, one day Cupid cut the divine finger nails of Venus with an arrowhead as she was sleeping. Cupid left the nail pieces scattered on the sand and fate turned them into stones so that no part of the heavenly body would ever perish. And these stones eventually became the onyx gemstone. Onyx, which is reddish brown and white, is known as sardonyx. Sardonyx was highly valued in Rome, especially for seals, because it was said to never stick to the wax. Roman General Publius Cornelius Scipio was known for wearing lots of sardonyx.

Onyx gemstones are used for their protective and healing properties. It is said to release negative energies and protect the wearer from impending dangers. Ancient Roman soldiers wore onyx talismans engraved with heroes such as Hercules or Mars, god of war as they believed that the stone would make the wearer as brave and daring as the figured carved on it. During the Renaissance, onyx was believed to bring eloquence upon the wearer and was regarded with great value by public speakers and orators. This gemstone is also believed to help in eliminating apathy, stress and neurological disorders.
