Woolen Quilt

Quilts are beddings with three layers. A quilt is composed of a quilt top, a batting layer and a fabric layer used as backing. The process of making quilts is called quilting.

Making a Woolen Quilt:

A quilt is generally made by combining the three layers of the quilt. Another method of making quilts is tying. In tying, thread, yarn or ribbon is used to sew the layers of the quilt together. The tied quilt materials hold the quilt layers together during use and also while the quilt is being washed. To make woolen quilts, the wool is first fulled. To make fulled wool, the wool is compressed and thickened until the structure of the wool fiber is no longer visible.

Fulled wool is more than ¼ inch thick and does not fray or ravel. The fulled wool is cut into desired pieces and stitched together using a machine. The fulled wool quilt is finished by applying the backing and machine quilting to it. A batting may or may not be added. The resultant quilt is very sturdy and machine washable.

Woolen Quilting Patterns:

Woolen quilting has several interesting patterns. The stitching of a quilt is generally started from the center and radiates out to the sides. Quilting is also frequently done along the seams. The patterns range from simple geometric patterns to complex tessellation designs. The network of stitches in the quilt traps air inside the quilts and makes it warm. The air trapped inside the quilt makes it warmer than several layers of backing or other sheets would have done.

The stitching itself can be used to create complex patterns and designs. Many people draw the quilt patterns before stitching. Other ways to create patterns is to use scraps of fabric to make designs. The top cover of a quilt is usually made of chintz, sateen or other shiny fabric to emphasize the intricate needlework used in quilting.
