Wool Blanket


A blanket is a large rectangular piece of bedding used especially during winter seasons to give warmth to the user while sleeping. Though the blankets and sheets are used for the same reasons but they are not the same. Blankets differ from sheets on the basis of their thickness and purpose. Blankets are used for warmth. They protect us from cold. Blankets are subdivided into different types like quilts, duvets and comforters. Like many other fibers wool is also a natural fiber which originated from animals. Wool is derived from the skin of sheep, goats, rabbits and alpacas.


These animals are used for producing high quality wool. Wool is a natural fiber and is composed of a protein known as Keratin and is a relatively coarse fiber. Wool blankets are the most traditional method of making blankets. The word blanket has been derived from Edmund Blanket, a 14th century clothier and wool merchant. Wool blankets are now available in variety of forms, patterns, shapes and sizes like luxury blankets, wool picnic blankets, designer blankets etc. Mostly three types of blankets are available in market; these are conventional blankets, polyurethane blankets and thermal blankets. Generally the conventional blankets are made of wool. Most of the conventional blankets are made of either pure or blended wool; these are the heaviest in weight but such blankets are not always the warmest.

Such types of blanket are generally the most durable and long lasting. A woolen blanket is made taking a variety of wool in different shapes and compositions for variation in the degrees of durability, warmth and softness. Wool Blankets are generally woven or stitch knitted. Woolen blankets can also be made by needles or made of flocking fibers over a polyurethane foam base. Woolen blankets are wavy, crimpy having scales on the upper surface. Texture and quality of wool blankets vary depending on the quality of wool and the breed of sheep.
