Meaning of Curtain

A curtain is a piece of cloth used for controlling the incoming light. Curtains are usually hung on the inside portions of a house window or doors just to block the extra lights. Curtains are available in variety of materials, shapes, sizes, patterns and colors. In any modern department store curtains are available in separate sections depending on their patterns. Some curtains are available in pure cotton material some are found in silk, woolen and other delicate materials. One such material of curtains is the voile curtains.

Historical Perspective: In the U.K, during 90s when net curtains gradually started disappearing voile curtains were used commonly. Soon in the markets good quality weaves became available and intricately designed voile curtains came in fashion. Famous companies such as Andrew Martin Ltd, Osborne & Little and other major market leads started the business of importing voile fabrics including embroidery, printed patterns and metallic threads. Now the manufacturing style of the voile curtains altered to match the new found selection. The style of making was not restricted to the old pattern of French pleating and gathered pleating and the curtains now began to be made as flags by applying the use of tracks and pole systems available in market.

Curtain Making: A voile curtain is made of a light weight woven fabric made of pure cotton or of mixed cotton materials like linen and polyester. The word voile has been originated from the French meaning veil. A voile curtain remains always in demand because of its light weight fabric. This quality of curtains is often used as soft furnishing. In hot countries often full length voile curtains are made and used as window hangings, mosquito nets etc; in colder regions the voile curtains are also called as net curtains and are generally used under heavy curtains with the same purpose of avoiding extra lights and of course to keep privacy. Since voile curtains have semi transparent quality, while making these usually heading tapes are used which are not easily seen through the fabric.
