Pillow Shams

Pillow shams are almost the same as pillow covers. Pillow shams are more decorative than utilitarian in purpose. The term pillow sham is a play on the word “sham” meaning “falsity” because they are used for show only. They fall into the decorative cover category.

Features of a Pillow Sham:
A pillow sham has an opening like an envelope. The back of the sham has overlapping pieces of fabric that stretch to accommodate the pillow. The flap is closed to hold the pillow neatly inside. Pillow shams have the advantage of fitting odd shaped or square pillows easily. There is less fabric left around the pillow once it is inserted inside. Pillow shams have frilly or ruffled edges with embellishments that are not applied on regular pillows. A sham covered pillow is used for dressing up a bed. They are removed while sleeping. Since pillow shams are mainly used as decorative items, they are available in a variety of materials from silk, satin and velvet to suede and crepe.

Making a Pillow Sham: To make a pillow sham, the pillow is first measured. The pattern for the sham is repeated on print or plaid fabric and identical pieces of fabric are cut for the front as well as the back of the sham. The material is stitched inside out, leaving one side free for the pillow to be inserted. Ruffles or other embellishments are added later on. While measuring pillow shams it is better to leave a few extra inches of cloth all around the edges to allow proper hemming of the cover. A zip or a few buttons may be provided at the back of the cover to allow the pillow to be firmly enclosed Shams are placed on divans or behind normal pillows on beds to provide aesthetic beauty in a room.
