Pillowcase

Pillows are soft supports for the head. They are made of cloth bags stuffed with fillers. The fillers of a pillow may be of foam, synthetic fills, feather or down. Pillows are usually rectangular in shape. The pillow is covered with a case of cloth known as a pillowcase. Pillowcases are removable.

Features of a Pillowcase:
A pillowcase is kept open at one end to enable the pillow to be slipped inside. A pillowcase accumulates a lot of dust and mites that aggravate allergies and therefore needs to be laundered regularly. Pillowcases are available in three sizes, the standard size; 20”x26”, the queen size; 20”x30” and the king size; 20”x36”. Pillowcases are usually made of skin friendly materials. The materials are also easily washable and long wearing. Preferred materials for making pillowcases are cotton, voile, wool or cambric.

Purpose of a pillowcase: A pillowcase protects the pillow from getting dirty and gathering dust. The pillowcase can be matched with the décor of the room to give a beautiful look to the room. Pillowcases are generally available along with the bed sheets and matched with the sheets. There are some special pillow covers available for people who are allergy prone. These are known as allergy relief pillow cases. Allergy relief pillowcases give protection from dust mites, mold, pet hair and other allergens.

Pillowcases can be bought in single packs or easily made at home. Special nursery pillow covers are available with bright and cheerful prints for kids. It is better to get pillowcases in soft fabrics since they are more comfortable to sleep on. Moisture absorbent fabrics are also preferred since they allow more breatheability and are cooler to use. Pillowcases should ideally be changed at least twice a week and more often during humid and hot weather.
