Lace is a kind of open work fabric with patterns made on it with holes. The holes in the lace can either be made by removing threads from a woven piece of cloth or the holes are created as a part of the weaving process. Lace making is an old craft which has been practiced for centuries. The clergy of the early Catholic Church used lace as a part of vestments during religious ceremonies. The widespread use of lace started in the 16th century. The most famous laces are those made in Belgium, Russia, Ireland, Spain and Hungary.
