Floor Cushion

Cushions are soft small pillow like items of furnishing used for sitting or kneeling upon. The term cushion is derived from the Old French; coisson/coussin. Cushions are used as soft supports for using to kneel on hard surfaces.

Origin of the Floor Cushion: The origin of the cushion can be traced back to the early Middle Ages. During those times, cushions were extremely large in size and had leather covers. They were firm and served as seats. Cushions were used as seats in France and Spain. In the Spanish court, cushions were seen as a substitute for chairs. The French people vied for the right to kneel on a cushion placed behind the king in church. The cushions were simply spread on the floor and the people squatted upon them. Nowadays floor pillows are used more for decorative purposes than utilitarian uses. In Japan, however, floor cushions are still used for sitting upon. Japanese floor cushions are known as “Tatami”. Floor cushions generally measure 26x26 inches. They are half the width of the textile and have less seam allowance.

Features of a Floor Cushion:

Floor cushions are available in a variety of styles and attractive designs. The cushions have attractive printed or elaborately decorated covers in a variety of fabrics. The fabrics may range from silk and velvet to cotton and linen, depending upon their use. Decorative floor pillows are covered with fancy materials and those used for practical purposes are covered in comfortable materials, preferably natural fabrics. Floor cushions are generally square or rectangular in shape. Some floor cushions are cylindrical in shape and are known as bolsters. Some floor cushions are also circular in shape. Floor cushions declined in popularity during the later part of the 1980's. Recently however it has made a comeback into the world of fashionable home décor. Floor cushions are being increasingly used by home decorators to give a quirky look to any room.
