Dyed Bed Sheet

A bed sheet is a flat broad woven piece of cloth used for covering mattresses. Bed sheets are usually woven on broadlooms. Bed sheets are hemmed in on all sides with one broad seam which goes at the head of the bed. Bed sheets are available in sets as part of bed linens. Bed sheets come in many varieties and styles. Most bed sheets are dyed before being printed or stitched. Even white bed sheets are dyed before being packed for selling.

The Process of Dyeing Bed Sheets:
Bed sheet fabrics are dyed using dye solutions or dye pastes. Dyes are applied by direct application. In the process of direct application, the dyestuff is either fermented or reduced before being applied. For cotton materials, direct dyes are the best choice since they are water soluble and can be applied to the fibers in an aqueous form. Dyes are applied with mordants to fix the color to the fibers. Mordants are also used to change the color and intensity of natural dyes. Previously, chromium salts were also used in dying. However chromium salts are no longer used due to environmental concerns. Nowadays fabrics are dyed using metal complex dyes.

Types of Dyeing:
Dyeing is of many types. Two popular dyed prints are tie & dye and batik. Tie & dye is done by tying up sections of the fabric and then dipping the material in a vat of dye. The parts which are tied up resist the dye; the rest of the fabric is colored. This creates interesting effects. Batik is done in much the same way, except that instead of the fabric being tied up, the parts which are to be undyed are covered in wax. Batik dyeing results in filaments of color to be spread across the cloth which gives the cloth a cobweb appearance. Dyed bed sheets are easy to wash and care for and are thus suitable for regular use.
