Information on Chikan work
The intricate thread work on the fabrix is known as chikankari or chikanwork. Traditionally, chikan work is embroidery work from Lucknow, India. The word itself means embroidery. Jahangir’s beautiful wife, Noor Jahan is known to have introduced this art in Lucknow. Chikan work is the most famous textile decoration style in Lucknow. It is also known as ‘Luckhnawi embroidery’. Chikan work can be created on home furnishing items or on apparels whether for men or for women. Initially, only white thread was used for this purpose. But, recently, with growing and changing times, colored threads came in use. Besides, the advent of newer fabrics has also led to the more sophisticated chikan work being done on bed sheets, bed covers, cushions and on clothes. For a more shimmering and scintillating effect, sequins are added on these materials.
