Actually, chiffon is a French word for rag. It is lightweight and has sheen and glamour attached to its appearance. Basically it is made from natural fibers like silk and cotton. Besides, synthetic fibers are also used to make this exquisite material of fabric known as chiffon. Typically, allied with silk and nylon, chiffon has diverse uses. Usually, it has utilitarian purposes. Hence, these are used for dress materials and for making curtains. Chiffon can also be dyed into various other colors. But, if polyester is used to produce chiffon, then it would be a little difficult to dye this particular chiffon. The distinctive feature of chiffon is that it resembles a mesh or a net and so it has see-through attribute. When viewed under a magnifying glass, it shows network of threads.

Since chiffon curtains are see-through ones, these are just for decoration. It will not serve the purpose of protection against sunlight and maintain privacy.

These days, chiffon is produced from polyester. Stretch-knit technique is used to weave it into a fabric or a cloth piece. Polyester chiffon has become popular worldwide. The distinctive characteristic of this material is that it is stain-resistant. Dry cleaning is recommended for this type of chiffon curtain. But polyester chiffon gets torn and degraded easily whereas silk chiffon does not. Polyester chiffon curtains are kept as ‘piece dyed’—single color or ‘cross-dyed’—different colors.
