Chenille Quilt


Chenille is a kind of fabric made of short length piles. The chenille yarn is generally made of cotton materials but the term chenille can also be used to describe acrylic, rayon and olefin fibers. Quilts made of chenille are soft and have a subtle sheen. Chenille quilts are ideal for everyday use as they are both comfortable and durable.

Nature of Chenille Quilts:

Chenille quilts are soft, fluffy and lightweight. Chenille is a skin friendly material and can be safely used as a quilting material for babies. Depending on the method of quilting, chenille quilts can be used in extremely cold weather or for chilly seasons. Chenille fabric has excellent abrasion resistant properties.

Making Chenille Quilts:

Chenille quilts are made either by hand or by a sewing machine. There are three layers in the quilt; a top layer, the insulating layer or batting and the backing. The needle is passed through all the three layers across the entire material of the quilting. Different patterns are followed in quilting. The stitches are used to create various designs. Two or more different colors or designs of chenille fabric are used to create contrasting effects and interesting shapes. Quilts made of chenille patchwork have detailed work in geometric shapes.
