Meaning of Canvas
The word canvas is a derivative of the Arabic word “cannabis”. Canvas was usually made with hemp. Canvas is a very thick fabric, made of cotton and used for making articles that undergo extreme wear and tear.

Use of Canvas Curtains:
Canvas curtains are commonly used in theaters or for stage productions. The canvas curtains are painted with scenery and used as a background for plays and other performances. Regular canvas is rough and cannot be used for home use. Special canvases are being manufactured nowadays. They have a smooth finish, are lightweight and come in various prints and colors to be used for domestic purposes.

Properties of Canvas Curtains: Canvas curtains are stain resistant, heat resistant, mildew, rot, bacteria and mold resistant. Curtains made from canvas take less time to dry, wrinkles can be got rid of by simply spraying the canvas fabric with hot water. It is abrasion resistant, puncture resistant and extremely tough to tear. The only downside to using canvas curtains is that they fade easily. However newer varieties of dyes are being developed that do not fade easily.

Types of Canvas Curtains: Canvas curtains used in homes are of only one type, but those used in theaters are of many types. Theatrical canvas curtains are backdrops, tabs, legs, tormentors and teasers. Each of these curtains has a specific purpose and is put up on the stage at certain specific positions. Only the main grand drapes are made of velvet or other such showy material.

Canvas is an inexpensive fabric. With the invention of improved qualities of canvas, the various uses of canvas now encompass household furnishings. Some manufacturers blend canvas with other fibers to produce fine quality curtain materials. Canvas curtains are quite versatile and can be used in various ways to create myriad effects by hanging them imaginatively.
