Bed Linen

Information on Linen
It is believed that linen is the oldest textile material in the world. Bed Linen can be referred to bed sheets and bed covers, bath linen or food and beverage linen. Actually, modern term ‘linen’ is a group name for woven textile that is used in homes, as towels, tablecloth and varied sheets and covers. Essentially, linen is a fabric that is made from the fibers of the ‘flax’ plant. Flax is widely known for its glistening properties. Besides, their color shade ranges from gray, ivory to tan or sandy tinges. It is extremely absorbent and cool fabric. Initially linen was extensively used for making towels and sheets. Hence, these days, linen could be referred to table, kitchen textile, bed and bath.

History of Linen
Being the oldest textile in the world, the history of linen dates back to thousand of years. Around 8000 B.C, various types of fabric like straws, seeds, fibers and yarn in fragmentary form were discovered in Swiss lake dwellings. In fact, linen was used in the Pre-Christian age and in the Mediterranean age. In ancient Europe, linen was used as currency. In Egypt, linen was used to wrap all the Egyptian mummies. It was believed that this was emblem of purity, light and wealth. Generally, these fabrics were produced from handspun yarns. Hence, these were superfine and soft materials for bed covers and sheets. Besides, curtains and tablecloths were also made. However, such kind of meticulous finish could not be produced from spinning machines.

Bed Linen Today

Typically, natural fibers like silk, cotton and flax are used to make contemporary linen. Besides, synthetic fibers like polyester and rayon are also used occasionally. However, in early times, fibers of flax plant were essentially used to make linen of any kind. In fact, at present flax has become expensive fiber and is also produced in small quantities. Hence, it is not extensively used to make linen. Indeed, natural fibers, especially cotton has replaced linen to make bed covers and different bed linens.
