Origin of Indian Pottery:

The origin of pottery in India can be traced back to the Neolithic age. Harrappan and Mohanjodaro cultures acclaimed the age of wheel-made pottery. These were characterized by well-burnt black painted red wares. The phase of glassy pottery started in the 12th century, when Muslim rulers encouraged potters from the Middle East to settle in India. Even today, the pottery industry in India is run on both cottage and modern lines. Hundreds of small and big factories all over the country keep this age-old tradition awake.

Significance of Indian Pottery:
Apart from profitable and decorative sociological significances, pottery in India has deep religious implication. For instance, if no image of a divinity is available, a water-pot is worshipped as mangal-ghat. The transparent blue pottery of Delhi and Jaipur, with its unique decoration patterns, has lent a touch of dignity to the art of pottery. Purposeful items like flowerpots or Diwali lamps too are a part of this fascinating tradition.
