Persia is the home to kalamkari. Around tenth century, with the developing trade relations between India and Persia, kalamkari was even brought to India. It was during thirteenth century that people of India saw the beautiful and wonderful work done on different fabrics that was eventually used for making different things needed for home decor.
Besides kalamkari paintings, it even included kalamkari rugs. The stories of Hindu epics formed the basis of kalamkari designs and initially, it was used to decorate the panels of temples. However, today with religious subject for kalamkari work varied floral and animal motifs have been also included. Moreover, kalamkari is also used for furnishings, clothing and other home decorations.
