Bed spreads are judged by their thread count. Thread count is used to measure the coarseness or smoothness of a fabric. Thread count is determined by counting the number of threads in one square inch of fabric. Thread counts are used especially for cotton and linen fabrics. Regular variety cloth has a thread count of 150 whereas high quality fabrics have thread count of 180 and above. Sheets with higher thread counts are softer. The fabric of bed spreads is also a necessary factor to be considered while buying. Poly cotton bed spreads do not require much ironing and are less expensive, but they do not breathe or absorb moisture. Bed spreads made of natural fibers have more breathing and absorption properties, but wrinkle easily. Before buying a bed spread the depth of the mattress should be measured so that the spread can be tightly secured around the mattress and does not slip.
