Bed Spreads

Bed spreads or bed sheets are large sheets of cloth that are laid above the bed mattresses. Generally people sleep on a bed spread. Bed spreads are available in fitted or flat varieties. A flat bed spread is a sheet of cloth rectangular in shape and a fitted bed spread has sewn corners that have sewn-in elastic.

Origin of Bed Spreads:
The bed originated around 3400 BC when Egyptian pharaohs moved their mattresses off the grounds and began sleeping on higher surfaces. The Roman Empire saw the advent of luxurious beds. Mattresses began to be stuffed with wool, feathers, reeds or hay. The Roman mattresses were richly decorated with paint, bronze, jewels and other precious metals. During the Renaissance the mattresses began to be covered with silk, velvet or satin sheets. Thus, the bed spread was born.

About Bed Spreads:

Bed spreads are judged by their thread count. Thread count is used to measure the coarseness or smoothness of a fabric. Thread count is determined by counting the number of threads in one square inch of fabric. Thread counts are used especially for cotton and linen fabrics. Regular variety cloth has a thread count of 150 whereas high quality fabrics have thread count of 180 and above. Sheets with higher thread counts are softer. The fabric of bed spreads is also a necessary factor to be considered while buying. Poly cotton bed spreads do not require much ironing and are less expensive, but they do not breathe or absorb moisture. Bed spreads made of natural fibers have more breathing and absorption properties, but wrinkle easily. Before buying a bed spread the depth of the mattress should be measured so that the spread can be tightly secured around the mattress and does not slip.

It is essential to have a good quality bed spread to ensure comfort and also afford aesthetic value to the room.
