Batik is found in wall hangings, decorative covers and also bed spreads. Batik bed spreads are considered by some as collectors items. The high quality cloth and the intricate hand printed batik designs mark it as a high end product. Special batik bed spreads are decorated with gold paint. There are thousands of different designs available. The designs can be categorized in two parts, geometric forms and free form motifs. Batik bed spreads have bright colors and designs that are influenced by the regions of production. Modern batik bed spreads have linear designs of leaves, flowers and birds. Modern designs on batik bed spreads use more colors than traditional designs and are reliant on the designer rather than traditional rules of craftsmanship.

Process of Batik Printing:

Batik is a complex and slow process of printing. The pattern is decided on white cloth. Selected areas are covered with wax and the fabric is dyed. Once the dye is fast, the wax is removed and another pattern is created and covered with wax once again. The dyeing process is repeated until the desired look is achieved. The finished fabric is treated with various chemicals to ensure that the color remains for a long time and retains its vibrancy.

Future of Batik:
Batik articles have secured a place in the world of high fashion thanks to the efforts of Malaysia’s First Lady, Datin Seri Endon Mahmood. Her obsession with batik led to the beginning of the campaign “Batik, Crafted for he World”. This campaign aims to put batik products in the spotlight through promotions and activities like fashion shows.
