Salvador Felipe Jacinto Dali Do mè nech popularly known as Salvador Dali was a Spanish artist who was highly influenced by Surrealism . It aims at the liberation of the individual and society by exercising the ‘unconscious mind' to achieve a dream like form, different from reality. Salvador Dali's paintings are said to be influenced by the Renaissance artists. He was also influenced by the theories of Sigmund Freud and Cubism of Picasso .
In the late 1930's he started painting in a more academic manner under the influence of Renaissance painter Raphael and was expelled from the Surrealist movement. He collaborated with Walt Disney for the Academy award nominated short cartoon Destino which was released posthumously in 2003. Dali did not limit himself to painting but was involved with movies, theatre, fashion, photography and other areas.
Dali employed extensive symbolism in his paintings. The elephant, egg and ants are recurring images in most of his paintings. He used bright colors to small objects set off against large patches of dull color. Dali used his Paranoiac-Critical method to draw many of his works. The Paranoiac-Critical method meant that Dali possessed the hallucinatory power to look at one object and "see" another.
Some of his famous works include The Persistence of Memory, The Great Masturbator, Premonition of Civil War, Crucifixion and The Sacrament of Last Supper .
