Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch painter of the Post-Impressionist era. His paintings are world famous and most expensive. He started painting at the age of 27 in the year 1880. At the beginning he worked with somber colors but later on was influenced by the Impressionism and Neo-impressionism ideas.
He was regarded as the pioneer of Expressionism. Expressionism is a subjective art form in which reality is distorted for an emotional effect. He influenced 20 th century artists to a huge extent and especially the Fauves and German Expressionists .
The themes of his early paintings include sunflowers, cypresses, peasants and rural backgrounds. The olive and cypress trees seen in the landscape painting with a couple walking and a crescent moon is a common theme in most of Van Gogh's paintings.
Primarily he used dark and gloomy earth colors but later on as he got influenced with the Impressionist style he started using lighter shades in his paintings. Many of Van Gogh's paintings have a remarkable use of oil paints. He produced more than 2000 works, most of which were developed in the later years of his life.
